The National Park Service is seeking public feedback on a draft plan for the Long Walk National Historic Trail.
The Long Walk was the forced removal and relocation of the Navajo and Mescalero Apache people to an internment facility at Bosque Redondo on the Pecos River at Fort Sumner in 1863 and 1864. More than 8,500 people were forced to leave their homes and march 100 to 500 miles. Hundreds died on the journey or while in captivity.
The proposed trail comprises about 1,350 miles of land routes in Arizona and New Mexico. If the routes are designated, the National Park Service would work with the Navajo Nation, the Apache Tribe and other federal, state and local agencies as well as private landowners to provide opportunities for people to visit important sites along the routes.
The Santa Fe meeting is from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the National Park Service building at 1100 Old Santa Fe Trail. For more information, call 988-6717.
