Santa Fe County Sheriff Greg Solano confirmed this afternoon that the man found dead today at the Santa Fe County Jail was Ronnie Romero, brother of Robbie Romero, the Santa Fe boy who went missing in 2000.
Ronnie Romero's body was found in this cell, but there were no apparent sign of drugs or foul play. Romero's cellmate did not know when Romero might have died but told investigators that he had heard snoring overnight.
Romero had returned to the jail Friday following a 30-day furlough during which Romero sought medical attention for a health condition. Solano did not divulge the nature of the health condition or the treatment Romero, 31, sought.
An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of Romero's death, Solano said. Romero's body will also undergo toxicological tests to determine whether drugs might have played a role in his death.
Results from the toxicological tests could take several months.
Santa Fe police have long suspected that Ronnie Romero might have had a hand in Robbie's disappearance.
However, Ronnie Romero had never been charged in that case. Romero's family in recent years has been engaged in litigation with the Santa Fe Police Department for access to records in the case.
Romero's family has contended that Robbie Romero is still alive and has worked hard to keep the case in the public eye.
