Police on Monday arrested a Santa Fe man on a charge of aggravated stalking. They say he continued to call and threaten a former girlfriend after he was twice jailed on similar charges this summer.

An arrest warrant was issued Friday for Manuel Anthony Maes, 28, based on a criminal complaint from Santa Fe police officer Michele Williams.

According to police, Maes was picked up Monday night at Owl Liquors, and he remains jailed in lieu of a $50,000 cash bond set Tuesday by Santa Fe County Magistrate Richard Padilla.

Police say Maes lives at 1500 Luisa St., No. 19. However, jail records list his address at 56 Apache Plume Drive.

Williams' affidavit states the following:

u A woman identified as "C.A." called police June 4 to report that Maes, her boyfriend of five months, had threatened to hit her with a bottle while he was intoxicated.

u Maes then was arrested and held in the Santa Fe County jail until his release on June 17, during which time he called C.A. seven times.

u On July 9, C.A. reported that Maes had continued to call, text message and email her, and had shown up at her workplace several times to attempt to speak with her.

u C.A. provided the police with 59 text messages from Maes, with content ranging from "u want me out ok" to "I am going to make sure the cops shoot me next time," and some messages threatening any man she went out with.

u Maes was arrested again on July 10 on an outstanding warrant and held until Aug. 12. Although he was ordered to wear an electronic-monitoring device, he did not.

u During this time, Maes continued to contact C.A. On Aug. 16, she obtained a restraining order from state District Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer, who ordered Maes to say away from C.A.'s residence and to cease contacting her.

u However, Maes continued to contact C.A., violating conditions of his release and sending emails such as, "You think I am jus gonna turn myself in like that no ... you made my life miserable."

u C.A. says she has been staying with friends rather than at her home because Maes' conduct "frightens her" and has caused her to believe he is "mentally unstable and is capable of doing physical harm to her."

Maes has an extensive criminal history, dating back to at least 2003. Online records indicate he has been jailed more than a dozen times for charges including armed robbery and assault and battery on a household member.

An admitted drug user, he sued Santa Fe County last year, claiming he was forcibly catheterized at the jail in 2008 so his urine could be tested. At the time, he was held on charges of aggravated stalking and assault on a police officer. His lawsuit was dismissed in late 2010.
