Several city employees saw a man climb a ladder outside of City Hall on Wednesday and jump from a tree with a rope around his neck.

Police are seeking information about the identity of the man, who is now getting treatment at Christus St. Vincent Medical Center. He was not carrying identification and his face is injured, said Capt. Aric Wheeler.

It does not appear the man worked for the city or had a connection to City Hall, said city Manager Robert Romero, but without knowing his name, he could not be certain.

The ladder the man climbed was propped against the building for a construction crew working on the roof on the north side of City Hall, near the courtyard that faces the Santa Fe Community Convention Center, Romero said.

Witnesses say roofers noticed a man climbing up and called to him to get down. The man quickly tied a thin, yellow nylon rope around the tree, said he was going to kill himself and jumped.

City Land Use Director Matt O'Reilly was among city workers who attempted to cut the man down before paramedics arrived.

"We saw the aftermath of it. We saw the guy hanging from a tree outside the windows of City Hall. A lot of staff are shaken up about it," he said.

O'Reilly and another city employee climbed ladders and cut him down just as police arrived. The man did not appear to have a pulse, he said.

The city arranged for a counselor to meet with employees who witnessed the incident. One onlooker said some people initially thought the man's body was debris falling from the roof, but someone in the office shouted that it appeared to be a person.
