Lucy Ortiz, the wife of a former Santa Fe mayor and previous president of a Roman Catholic religious organization in Santa Fe, has died at the age of 102. Her 103rd birthday would have been Oct. 15.

Lucy Ortiz will be buried Friday in Rosario Cemetery following a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. in the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi.

"Lucy went to daily Mass for many years and became president of the Third Order of St. Francis at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi," said Angela Lopez, one of Ortiz's six children. "She also belonged to the Catholic Daughters of America and had a special devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Francis."

Lucy Ortiz was born in Bernalillo and attended school there, including at Our Lady of Sorrows, where she was taught by the Sisters of Loretto.

She later moved to Santa Fe and married Frank Ortiz, who was mayor of Santa Fe from 1948 to 1952. Ortiz Park is named after Frank Ortiz.

The couple owned and operated a grocery store, Frank's Supermarket, at the intersection of Paseo de Peralta and Galisteo Street. The building is now the home of Restaurant Martin, a new restaurant.

The Ortizes had six children, one of whom, Josephine Ortiz, is deceased. In addition to Angela Lopez, the others are Frank Ortiz Jr., Donald Ortiz, Eva Parker and Carmen Werner.

"Lucy lived a long, healthy life until her last years," Angela Lopez said. The last years of her life were spent in the village of Rio en Medio in the care of Elena Talavera. "It was common to see a rosary in her hands, especially toward the end of her life."

Lucy Ortiz, Angela Lopez added, "was a good example for her children and other people. She followed a true Christian Franciscan life."
