Santa Fe High goes on lockdown
Santa Fe High School was placed on lockdown Friday afternoon after a young man allegedly connected to a burglary ring told a health center counselor he had cut off an electronic monitoring anklet and was suicidal.
Santos Treto, 18, is one of nine suspects in a burglary ring that allegedly stole tens of thousands of dollars of cash and property.
On Friday, Treto was at a health center at Santa Fe High with his sister, who was there for a counseling session, according to Capt. Gary Johnson.
Treto told the counselor that he had cut off the anklet and threatened to hang himself from a tree, Johnson said. Health center staff tried to detain him, but Treto got away, Johnson said.
School officials then decided to place the school on lockdown, Superintendent Bobbie Gutierrez said. There was no school Friday, but faculty were still working.
Johnson said police did not find Treto and are not actively looking for him. If it turns out he did cut the monitoring device off, Johnson said, a warrant will be issued for his arrest.
Center sets grasshopper contest
Love catching grasshoppers but don't know what to do with them? You could join a friendly competition this summer and help feed animals at The Wildlife Center, New Mexico's only wildlife education and rehabilitation facility.
The center, which has a goal of collecting 100,000 grasshoppers, will award prizes to individuals and groups who gather the most grasshoppers through Aug. 15.
Participants can collect grasshoppers by hand or small net and place them in ventilated containers, then bring them into the center from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday through Monday for weighing and tabulation. The containers should be kept in a cool, dark place for up to 24 hours, or in the freezer compartment of your refrigerator, until they can be taken to the center.
The winning prize is a free birthday party at the center, where the winner and his or her friends can get up-close and personal with some of the animals the grasshoppers will help feed.
For more information, contact the center at 505-753-9505. The center is located on Wheat Street in Arroyo Seco, just south of Española.
Would-be mugger fails
at Rail Runner station
A would-be bicycle mugger attempted to steal a wallet Thursday afternoon from a passenger getting off a Rail Runner train at the South Capitol station, police said.
A 52-year-old Los Alamos lab scientist told investigators he had just exited a train car about 4 p.m. when a man on a bicycle yelled at him, pushed him and tried to lift his wallet from a back pants pocket.
After failing to get the wallet, the man fled on his bicycle.
The would-be robber was described as a white male wearing a long shirt and a white hat with red lettering.
Bond set for burglary suspect
Bond was set at $50,000 Friday for an Española man accused of two residential burglaries and setting one of the homes on fire.
Julian Martinez, 20, is accused of setting fire to a residence at 09 Camino Rio, Chimayó, after burglarizing the home on April 17. Fire officials said water and fire and smoke damage to the residence was extensive.
Martinez is also accused of the April 23 burglary of a home on Santa Fe County Road 82A.
He was arrested on a warrant during an April 24 traffic stop by sheriff's deputies.
