Gunmen kill one at Duke City diner

ALBUQUERQUE — Police in Albuquerque say a restaurant employee has been killed after several armed suspects attempted a takeover-style robbery at a packed Denny's Restaurant.

Police spokeswoman Officer Nadine Hamby says "multiple" armed suspects rushed the northwest Albuquerque restaurant at about 9:30 a.m. Saturday. As many as 100 people were inside.

Police say a female restaurant employee was shot and killed, but her identity was not immediately released.

Hamby says police cannot yet disclose if anything was taken from the restaurant.

Two people have been detained, but Hamby says it's unclear if they are suspects in the case.

A police tactical team surrounded an Albuquerque home where other possible suspects were believed to have fled, but it was later found to be empty.

Hamby says detectives were still interviewing more than 60 witnesses and not all saw the same thing. Witnesses reported seeing from two to six suspects.

FBI renews 1999 investigation

The FBI announced Friday that it is planning to revisit the burial site of an unidentified woman in her mid- to late 30s discovered in 1999.

Her body was found on Navajo land near Gallup by two young boys. Investigators believe she might have been buried for a year before her body was discovered. The woman had suffered blunt-force trauma to her chest that might have contributed to her death.

The investigators plan to use some new grave site evidence recovery techniques employed in the recent Albuquerque West Mesa grave site investigations.

The FBI also released forensic drawings of the victim and her jewelry — earrings and a beaded anklet.

Anyone with information is asked to contact FBI special agent John Fortunato a 505-726-6002.

Madrid plans July 4th celebrations

In the 1920s and 1930s, Madrid's July 4th celebration was nearly as famous as its Christmas light display.

This year, the day begins with a softball game between the Mine Shaft Tavern and Java Junction Coffee Shop at the historic Oscar Huber Memorial Ball Field, the first lighted ball field in the state.

The parade kicks off at noon and usually features Madroids, kids, lamas, dogs, horses, business floats and fire engines.

Over 40 galleries and restaurants will be open. There will also be stagecoach rides down the main street ($5 each), self-guided walking tours and displays of historic photos in the Johnsons of Madrid Galleries performance theater.

The town is located on N.M. 14 about 25 minutes south of Santa Fe.

State museums open for holiday

All four state museums in Santa Fe will be open July 4.

The museums include the Palace of the Governors/New Mexico History Museum and the New Mexico Museum of Art on the Plaza, and the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and the Museum of International Folk Art on Museum Hill, on Camino Lejo off Old Santa Fe Trail.

The museum hours will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
