Guard in armored car rollover dies

The Brinks guard who was riding in the back of an armored car that rolled on Interstate 25 on Monday evening died of severe head trauma late Monday in Santa Fe, police said.

Vincent Fernandez, 34, of Rio Rancho died about 10:30 p.m. at Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, state police spokesman Lt. Eric Garcia said. The driver of the armored car, Grant Williams, 45, of Edgewood, remained in stable condition Tuesday morning at the hospital, he said.

The armored car experienced a tire blowout just after 5 p.m. near the La Cienega exit while heading southbound. The vehicle first hit a pickup driving next to it, then left the road, entered the median and began to roll. The armored car rolled over the New Mexico Rail Runner tracks and came to rest on its wheels on the other side.

Garcia said investigators from the Department of Public Safety's Motor Transportation Division confirmed Tuesday that the tire blowout caused the accident.

Motorists warned of traffic disruptions

Traffic on some major streets will be affected by construction work today, according to city news releases.

Crews are scheduled to install pavement markings in the median left-turn bay on Cerrillos Road at Railfan Road, starting at 10 a.m., weather permitting.

The work will require short-term closure of the inside, eastbound lane of Cerrillos Road between Baca Street and Railfan Road, an announcement said.

On Don Gaspar Avenue, crews today and Thursday are scheduled to begin construction of curb ramps at the intersections of East DeVargas Street and Booth Street, weather permitting.

The work is part of a larger effort to improve accessibility for the disabled in according with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines, an announcement said.

Traffic devices and flaggers will be in place between Alameda Street and Laughlin Street.

Warrant roundup nets 22 arrests

Law-enforcement officers made 22 arrests during a two-day "warrant roundup" throughout Rio Arriba and Santa Fe counties late last week, the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Department said Tuesday.

The arrests resulted from 33 warrants served, the announcement said, because several individuals had more than one warrant served on them.

Offenses included failure to comply with conditions of release, probation or parole arrest orders; failure to appear as ordered by a court; failure to pay fines; bench warrants for traffic-related infractions; possession of drug paraphernalia; possession of cocaine; possession of marijuana; and felon in possession of a firearm.

Santa Fe County Sheriff Greg Solano said agents, deputies and officers from six agencies participated in the roundup on Thursday and Friday.

City plans water service outage

City workers plan to shut off water service in a west-side Santa Fe neighborhood from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today during replacement of a water main valve near the intersection of Agua Fría and Salazar Place.

Residents on Salazar Place, Kathryn Place and Cortez Place will be affected by the shutoff, a city announcement said.

The city says neighborhood residents should draw water for personal use before the shutoff and said they shouldn't attempt to use water during the outage.

The water division also announced that the city's online bill pay will be unavailable from 6 p.m. Monday to midnight Tuesday in order for staff to perform routine maintenance. Customers will be able to access the system July 1 at 12:01 a.m.
