Baumann house open this weekend

This weekend may be your last chance to tour artist Gustave Baumann's home and studio.

Baumann, known for his colorful wood blocks with local landscapes, built the 1,800-square-foot adobe house at 409 Camino de las Animas in 1923.

After his death in 1971, his widow and daughter sold the property to lawyer Anne Albrink, who retained most of the artistic features added by Baumann.

The Historic Santa Fe Foundation bought the property from Albrink two years ago, completed conservation work there and now is planning to put it up for sale with an easement that will protect the building in perpetuity.

But before it goes on the market, the foundation is opening it up to public tours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Donations of $10 are suggested.

On July 10, the Historic Santa Fe Foundation and the New Mexico Museum of Art will host performances at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m., with Baumann's marionettes on his original stage in the home's living room. Donations of $100 are suggested.

For more information, call the foundation at 983-2567 or visit www.indiegogo.com/Magic-Returns-to-Gustave-Baumann-House.

Airport taxiway work gets funds

The Santa Fe Municipal Airport has received $3.2 million in federal grants to improve two taxiways.

The largest grant — $2.6 million — comes from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Aviation Administration, which typically contributes additional maintenance funds to help the airport operate safely, U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., said in a statement.

"The Santa Fe Municipal (Airport) has grown with the addition of commercial airline service in recent years," Bingaman said. "This grant will ensure that the airport is in top shape."

The work includes the installation of medium-intensity taxiway lights and new signage and markings.

American Eagle Airlines serves Santa Fe with daily commercial jet flights to Dallas/Fort Worth and Los Angeles.

The federal government is expected to contribute an additional $620,000 for the taxiway project, for a total of $3.2 million to improve taxiways A and C.

Clean-up effort scheduled on Museum Hill

Many hands make for light work, the saying goes.

Members of the Santa Fe Botanical Garden hope volunteers will join them Saturday in collecting debris from the Arroyo de los Pinos.

The group is cleaning up the future site of the Botanical Garden at Museum Hill. Workers will meet at the overflow parking lot in front of the Museum of International Folk Art at 8:30 a.m. and work until 10 a.m.

Volunteers should wear sturdy shoes and bring work gloves and water. Trash bags will be provided.

Student prose, art at bookstore

Students from several local educational and nonprofit organizations will gather for a combination art exhibition and poetry/prose reading from 5:30 to 8 p.m. today at Collected Works Bookstore, 202 Galisteo St.

The free event features staffers and students from the Santa Fe Indian School Leadership Institute's Summer Policy Academy — which helps promote discussion on a range of public policy and tribal community issues — the Santa Fe Indian School, the Institute of American Indian Arts, the Santa Fe Indian Market and Fine Arts for Children and Teens.

Contact the bookstore at 988-4226.
