Sheriff: 2-year-old injured in dog attack

A 2-year-old girl was attacked by a chow-mix dog in Stanley on Saturday morning, Santa Fe County Sheriff Greg Solano said.

The child and her parents, all of Albuquerque, were visiting her grandparents' home at the time of the attack, Solano said.

The dog, which belonged to her grandparents, was tied with a light chain at about 8 a.m. when he attacked the child, who suffered severe facial and neck damage, and puncture wounds to the head. The child was taken by the family to Presbyterian Medical Center in Albuquerque.

The child was in serious condition after undergoing several surgeries throughout the day. The dog was put down at the scene and will be tested for rabies. Its vaccinations were not current.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office will continue investigating the incident; no charges have yet been filed.
