The Legislature has given final approval to a measure creating additional judgeships in New Mexico.

The bill provides for an extra district court judge in the 2nd Judicial District of Bernalillo County and one in Sandoval County in the 13th Judicial District. About $459,000 is allocated to pay for the judges and support staff next year.

The measure also creates one additional judge for the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court.

Supporters say the judgeships are needed to handle increasing caseloads in the courts.

The bill goes to Gov. Susana Martinez.

The House-passed proposal cleared its final legislative hurdle when the Senate unanimously approved it on Monday.
