Green is the new black. Or at least that's what radio, television, newspapers and your neighbors are saying.

Whether it's switching to compact fluorescent light bulbs, paying extra for wind energy, riding your bike or buying a hybrid car, "going green" is all the rage.

Individuals are trying to change their lives, and they're expecting their local governments to do the same.

But what exactly does "greening" mean in our brown, high-desert climate, and how have governments around Santa Fe gone about making changes?

Most are going for the low-hanging fruit: adjusting thermostats, buying alternative fuel cars for government fleets or planning minor building renovations. Bigger energy-saving measures such as retrofitting older facilities are tougher, more expensive and slower to materialize.
