Santa Fe's latest fatal accident involving a suspected drunken driver, which left four teens dead, is generating a lot of talk and emotions about DWI. On Wednesday, people will have a chance to air their feelings and propose solutions.
Impact DWI, a local nonprofit, is sponsoring a community forum Wednesday at the Santa Fe Community College.
The discussion will be led by Richard Roth, a retired physicist and longtime DWI researcher and lobbyist, who is the group's executive director.
"My main purpose of this forum is to make sure everybody has an opportunity to have his or her suggestion heard," Roth said.
Participants will get notecards on which to write their suggestions and will then have a chance to read those ideas aloud, Roth said.
Roth, who drafted and lobbied for legislation requiring ignition interlock devices on vehicles of DWI offenders, said he also hopes to help participants find ways to act on implementing their ideas.
There might be some lawmakers present, Roth said, but he hopes that they will come to listen to the community and not use the forum as a political tool.
The forum is scheduled from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday in the Jemez Room at Santa Fe Community College.
The gathering is co-sponsored by the Santa Fe Community Foundation, Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the Santa Fe DWI Program.
