A small fire broke out Friday morning at La Fonda, leaving a second-story portion of a north-facing exterior wall singed.
Assistant Fire Chief Erik Litzenberg said a piece of insulation caught fire as a roofing crew heated up roofing materials.
"That produced a huge amount of smoke, but did almost no damage whatsoever," he said. "It was very quickly extinguished. so it was really more of a show than anything else."
Firefighters used their ladder truck to reach the smoldering area next to a balcony while police closed off the block of East San Francisco Street between Old Santa Fe Trail and Cathedral Place.
By 11:30 a.m., crews were packing up their equipment. A city building permit poster was visible on the door to a vacant shop facing San Francisco Street, just below the singed portion of the wall.
