While authorities conduct a manhunt for 54-year-old Arthur Anaya, accused of fatally shooting two people earlier this week at his property south of Santa Fe, people who know him are expressing fear, saying he has always been a violent man.

A neighbor who wished to remain anonymous out of concern that Anaya is capable of retribution said Anaya was confrontational as a young boy.

"He's been pretty screwed up all his natural life," the neighbor said.

Anaya grew up on the property where Austin Urban, 16, and Theresa Vigil, 51, were killed after what investigators said was a dispute over rent. Anaya inherited the property, which includes a house and at least two trailer homes, from his parents, Angie Lujan and Martin Anaya.

Arthur Anaya, who has a criminal record that includes violence, incarceration and a stay in a mental institution, is one of six siblings.

A family member who spoke on condition of anonymity said Arthur Anaya tried to shoot one of his sisters after an argument in the 1980s. He reportedly put a handgun to her head and pulled the trigger. The gun misfired and the sister survived, but she has been hiding from Anaya since.

"There are people that are still endangered by him," the person said, adding that it's not clear why he became a violent man.

"He came from a very good family. His mom and father couldn't have done more for him," the person said. "He wasn't neglected or anything like that."

According to a neighbor, Arthur Anaya as a child would sometimes sit at a school bus stop off Old Galisteo Road and pick fights with local children.

Arthur Anaya's criminal history spans decades and includes several charges for violent offenses in Colorado as well as New Mexico.

Anaya in 2005 was sentenced to 18 years in prison for felony counts including attempted murder of his sister. Anaya spent four years in prison following that sentencing. He was given 10 years of credit for his time in custody prior to trial -- including probation and a lengthy stay at a state-run mental health facility in Las Vegas, N.M. -- and he earned early release in 2009 for "good time" served.

Although court documents state that he was supposed to be on probation through 2014, he was taken off supervised probation in 2010, shortly after his early release from the New Mexico Department of Corrections.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday that investigators were continuing to pursue various leads in an effort to locate Anaya, who is the subject of an arrest warrant on two open counts of murder. Maj. Ken Johnson said the area around the shooting scene, just south of Interstate 25 and west of St. Francis Drive, has been searched completely, both on the ground and with the help of a helicopter.

While a few officers continue to patrol the area, he said, "That sweep is pretty much done."

A nationwide alert has been issued for Anaya, who is considered armed and dangerous.

"It's scary to know he's still out there," a family member said. "He's still capable of killing and hurting somebody. He's already killed two people, so there's nothing to lose now."

Investigators asked that anyone with information regarding Anaya's whereabouts call 911 or the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office at 428-3720. A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to Anaya's arrest.

Authorities said Theresa Vigil, 51, was pronounced dead Tuesday at Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center after she was shot in the head Monday in the trailer home she rented from Anaya. Investigators said Austin Urban, 16, who was dating Vigil's daughter, died at the scene after he was shot in the mouth.

Family and friends of the Vigil family have set up a memorial fund to help with funeral costs in the name of Theresa Vigil at First National Bank of Santa Fe.
