The next Santa Fe city councilor from south-central District 4 won't be a new face on the governing body. While neither candidate is an incumbent, both have served on the council before.
Carol Robertson Lopez, if elected, would serve side by side with the councilor who ousted her from a council seat in the 2006 city election by a narrow margin. Lopez, a retired state worker who directs a children's charity, says the current race represents a new day.
Dimas was elected to the City Council 25 years ago and stepped down midway through his term. He later campaigned for and held on to a magistrate judge post for three terms.
District 4 stretches along Rodeo Road between St. Francis Drive and Cerrillos Road, and includes the Bellamah neighborhood off Siringo and Zia roads as well as Camino Carlos Rey. Of the four council districts, it's the one with the most even racial/ethnic split. Data from the 2010 census list about 52 percent of the district's residents as Hispanic.
The district includes some large subdivisions approved within the last decade that still aren't fully built out, as well as a large, mixed-use development under construction called Las Soleras.
Each of the city's four council districts has two representatives, elected to staggered four-year terms. Ronald Trujillo is midway through his second term. After defeating Lopez in 2006 by two votes, he ran unopposed in 2010. Councilors receive about $25,000 in annual pay for the part-time position.
