Investigators found two empty beers cans, a small amount of suspected marijuana and an unopened 12-pack of beer in the Jeep Cherokee driven by the man accused of causing a crash last month that killed four local teens, according to court documents.
The two empty Tecate beer cans found in the car are the same brand allegedly bought by Scott Owens at the Sunrise General Store on Old Las Vegas Highway the night of the crash. The unopened 12-pack of Budweiser beer is the same brand Owens' boss said he purchased at the same time Owens bought the Tecate, but said it never was consumed at a barbecue on Rowe Mesa the two attended before the crash.
Detectives did not specify how much suspected marijuana was found in the 1992 Jeep, only that it was discovered in a "small glass jar," according to a search warrant filed Tuesday in state District Court. Investigators found a glass pipe containing suspected burnt marijuana residue on the left front floorboard of the Cherokee, the warrant states.
Owens was allegedly driving in the wrong lane of Old Las Vegas Highway just past midnight June 28 when he struck the passenger side of a 1992 Subaru sedan driven by Avree Koffman, 16. Four passengers in the car — Julian Martinez, 16, Rose Simmons, 15, Alyssa Trouw, 16, and Kate Klein, 16 — were killed instantly. Koffman is recovering from serious injuries at an Albuquerque hospital.
Owens' blood-alcohol content was .16 — twice the legal driving limit — nearly four hours after the crash when his blood was drawn at Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center. Koffman had no alcohol in her system at the time of the crash. Further tests to determine other substances in the drivers' blood are pending.
Investigators also found a cell phone, surgical clamps and a digital camera in Owens' Jeep, as well as a bag containing clothing and books, a black suitcase and a plastic bag with various photos, the warrant says.
In addition, they found an identification card belonging to Koffman and school papers and binders that may have belonged to her or others in her car, said Santa Fe County Sheriff Greg Solano. He said those items likely were on the road when the tow-truck driver moved the two wrecked vehicles to a county holding facility, and the driver threw them in the wrong car.
The empty beer cans will be tested for fingerprints and DNA at the state crime lab, which will determine where they came from, Solano said. The suspected marijuana also will be tested, he said.
Owens remains incarcerated at the Santa Fe County jail in lieu of a $3 million cash-only bond.
