A 59-year-old Eldorado man died Wednesday after his car was struck head-on by a sport utility vehicle that hit an icy spot on U.S. 285 and crossed the center line, authorities said.

Kendall Kalsted was driving a 2002 Volkswagen Beetle southbound in an area between Eldorado and Lamy Junction just before 10 a.m. when a northbound Suzuki Grand Vitara smashed into his car, Santa Fe County Undersheriff Robert Garcia said.

The driver of the Suzuki, Daniel Roach, 50, had lost control on a patch of ice and veered into the southbound lane, he said.

Kalsted and his wife, Rebecca Kalsted, 54, were taken to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, where Kendall Kalsted was pronounced dead just before 1 p.m., Garcia said. Rebecca Kalsted suffered a collapsed lung, a concussion and a fractured hip and was in serious condition, he said.

Laura Roach, 50, Daniel Roach's wife, also was taken to the hospital in serious condition with fractured ribs, a bruised heart, blood in her lungs, a fractured arm and possible neurological damage, Garcia said. Daniel Roach suffered a fractured hip, he said. The Roaches are from the Pecos area, Garcia said.

A 2009 GMC Yukon traveling behind the Volkswagen also hit the Volkswagen and possibly the Suzuki, Garcia said. That driver and his two passengers, who were on their way home to Dallas, were not injured, he said.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, and all four people who were injured were wearing seat belts, Garcia said.

The accident was, by far, the most serious during a day that saw icy and snowy road conditions throughout the Santa Fe area, though it was hardly the only one.

Sheriff's deputies also handled an SUV rollover on N.M. 14 in the morning, but no one was injured in that crash, Garcia said.

State police officers handled 22 total accidents in the Santa Fe area — 13 without injuries and nine with injuries, said spokesman Peter Olson. None involved serious injuries, he said.

City police officers also had their hands full dealing with crashes and fender-benders, but none involved serious injuries, said Santa Fe police Lt. Dale Lettenberger.
