The Santa Fe County Sheriff's Department's saturation patrol nabbed one suspected drunken driver late Friday and early Saturday, and deputies nabbed a few others on the same charge.

But the next night, under a routine patrol effort, deputies tallied nine DWI arrests.

The difference?

"It was just an exceptional night for DWIs," Sheriff Greg Solano said Sunday. "It was beyond the norm completely."

Solano said Fiesta de Santa Fe celebrations might have contributed to the total. "It could be Fiesta — we're kind of guessing, but that's the only thing exceptional that was going on," he said.

The sheriff said his department had a standard two traffic officers on patrol when the slew of arrests were made late Saturday and early Sunday.

Among the arrests, according to reports, one driver nearly struck a deputy's car, one struck a tree, another said he drank a 24-pack of beer, another drove down the middle of N.M. 599 and posted breath-alcohol level nearly three times the legal limit of .08 and another blew a .27 (more than three times the limit) while driving with three children in his vehicle.
