On Aug. 25, Gene J. Quintana, a 20-year-old construction worker with YouthWorks, pled guilty to DWI. He was sentenced to 90 days suspended in the county detention center, one year on an interlock and 24 hours of community service and had to pay numerous fines and fees.

Two weeks later, on Sept. 7, a Santa Fe County Sheriff's Deputy stopped him for speeding near Fairway Village off of Cottonwood Drive. Quintana, who was going 11 mph over the limit, was behind the wheel of a blue, 2005 Toyota Camry.

Quintana told the deputy, Sergeant Joseph E. McLaughlin Jr., that his driver's license was at his house. But a quick check with the state Department of Motor Vehicles revealed that Quintana's license had been revoked for a DWI. He had an open container of Lord Calvert, Canadian whiskey in the glove box and his front-seat passenger was found to be drunk.

Quintana was booked on a $3,500 bond for driving on a revoked license, speeding and an open container.

Vehicles of convicted DWI offenders are subject to seizure and forfeiture under Santa Fe city and county ordinances. Quintana's car was booted for 30 days beginning Sept. 22. The car was released back to him on Oct. 21.
