Firefighters on Saturday continued to work on managing a lightning-caused fire burning in a remote area of the Bandelier National Monument and Santa Fe National Forest.

Smoke from the approximately 856-acre fire, located about 22 miles northwest of Santa Fe, has been visible from Los Alamos, Santa Fe, Albuquerque and Interstate 25, especially in the afternoons and evenings.

A Hotshot Crew worked on the northeast area of the fire to prepare a fire line that will help protect a backcountry cabin, an interagency news release said.

Bandelier National Monument remains open, and main visitor areas are not affected by the fire, the statement said, although some backcountry areas are closed.

The fire, first spotted July 2, is burning in piñon, juniper, ponderosa pine and grass.

Farther north, the lightning-caused Jacquez Fire, located about 20 miles north of Cuba in the Llaves area, was estimated to have grown to 97 acres since it was reported Tuesday.

"It is still just creeping around," a Santa Fe National Forest report said Saturday. "Fire crews are monitoring."

No structures are threatened by the fire, which officials said is being managed for resource benefits rather than full suppression.

"The fire will continue to grow with climbing temperatures and drier conditions," the report said.
