Incumbent Santa Fe County Treasurer Victor Montoya had a considerable lead over his opponent, Robert Rubin, in Tuesday's primary election.

Montoya had about 73 percent of the votes in his race with Rubin, an employee in the State Auditor's Office, with nearly all of the votes counted.

As the Democratic nominee, Montoya would be assured of another four-year term because no Republican is running in the November general election.

Montoya's former deputy, Phil Trujillo, caused a stir early in the race by voicing support for Rubin and accusing Montoya of treating constituents poorly. Montoya also faced allegations he pressed employees to sell raffle tickets for his campaign.

But Montoya's success in investing county money and his experience as a member of the Public Employee Retirement Associations Board apparently trumped those issues.

Montoya, 65, has considerable experience in finance-related jobs, including stints in the State Auditor's Office, the Attorney General's Office and the State Land Office.

Montoya has said if re-elected to the $57,000 a year post, he plans to implement a system that would allow taxpayers to pay bills online and use credit cards to pay the Treasurer's Office.
