Santa Fe Mayor David Coss, attending a memorial Sunday for one of four teenagers killed in an auto accident that police say appears to be linked to a DWI driver, pledged a communitywide effort to curb drunken driving.

"This is not acceptable," Coss said in an interview at the memorial for Julian Martinez, 16, a student at Monte del Sol Charter School killed in the collision on Old Las Vegas Highway early June 28.

Coss said city councilors and county commissioners will meet in a joint session Wednesday to discuss with other leaders such as those in law enforcement, educators and emergency room workers possible ways of reducing the number of drunken-driving related auto crashes.

He said the community leaders must launch a three-pronged effort against DWI drivers that would include tougher laws, education and treatment.

"We have to (reduce the role) alcohol plays in our community," Coss said. "We need to come together to work on resources."

Coss said efforts have been made in numerous circles to reduce incidents of DWI but "change must come faster."
