Think you know where to cast your ballot in the city election? Think again.

City Clerk Yolanda Vigil is urging unsure voters to verify their addresses and precincts with her office before heading to the polls Tuesday. Voters should be aware that some polling locations have changed since the last city election, she said, and city polls aren't at the same places where many voted in the February presidential caucus run by the Democratic Party.

"It's very important for them to call us so we can verify their information and let them know where to go," Vigil said. "We are districted, so even though they might live right next door to a polling place, just because of the way the district lines run, they may be in a different district."

Voters should note that three polling places are new for the city. In District 2, voters who previously cast ballots at St. John's Methodist Church will vote this year at the Unitarian Church.

Vigil said the city made the change to stay consistent with what Santa Fe County does for the primary and general elections. The county switched to the Unitarian facility because St. John's significantly increased its fees for building use and because the other church has better access, said Santa Fe County Deputy Clerk Denise Lamb.

Voters who used to report to Municipal Court should instead go to Ortiz Middle School. Vigil said that change was made to avoid the cluster of people trying to get to court while others are trying to vote.

In District 4, voters will cast ballots at the Genoveva Chavez Community Center instead of traffic-plagued Piñon Elementary School.

Only voters who were registered with the county clerk before Feb. 4 are eligible to cast ballots in the election. City residents who have been mailed identification cards from the county clerk can look up their precinct number and match it to the following list. Those who are unsure should call the city clerk at 955-6519, 955-6520 or 955-6521.
