A 78-year-old Chimayó man died Tuesday morning after his home caught on fire, police said.
Firefighters were dispatched to the residence off Santa Fe County Road 94 just after 8 a.m., and arrived to find the inside of the home engulfed in flames, said Lt. Eric Garcia, state police spokesman.
Firefighters entered the home, saw Vicente Martinez's body lying on the floor of the front room and dragged him out, Garcia said.
However, the man was already dead by that time, he said. Martinez was the only person in the home, Garcia said.
A state fire marshal, Dan Wright, determined that the fire started as the result of an improperly installed wood heater, Garcia said.
The fire was extinguished around 9 a.m.
