Law-enforcement officers arrested five drunken-driving suspects at the Wednesday evening checkpoint on Interstate 25, located at the spot where five members of a Las Vegas, N.M., family were killed by a drunken driver exactly three years earlier.
Officers scrutinized 875 cars on the highway near Eldorado between about 6:30 p.m. and midnight, Corp. Bill Ritch of the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office said. Officers pulled aside a dozen drivers for suspicion of drunken driving and arrested five, which Ritch said was a large number "especially for a Wednesday night."
Those arrested included Richard Rogers, 70, of Eldorado, who is the editor of the Sun Monthly newspaper, according to a Santa Fe Police Department police report. Rogers refused chemical testing and was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, the report says.
Also arrested was Elizabeth Lake, 25, of Rowe, who told officers she is actor Val Kilmer's assistant, according to a Santa Fe Police Department police report. Lake's breath-alcohol content was .12, the report says.
Santa Fe County sheriff's deputies arrested Jason Madrid, 30, of Santa Fe, whose breath-alcohol content was .16, double the legal driving limit, and charged him with aggravated DWI, according to a police report. Deputies also arrested Michael Schweigman, 26, of Santa Fe, whose breath-alcohol content was .12, on a DWI charge, as well as Gary Kearns, 58, of Santa Fe, who refused chemical testing and was charged with aggravated DWI.
The checkpoint was set up at the spot where Dana Papst, who was driving the wrong way on I-25, crashed into and killed Paul Gonzales, his wife, Renee Collins-Gonzales, and three of their children Nov. 11, 2006. Papst also died.
In addition to the checkpoint conducted by officers, relatives and friends of the Gonzales family held a candlelight vigil Wednesday evening at the crash scene, which is marked by a descanso in the highway median.
