The eighth annual Santa Fe Bandstand series of free, live music performances on the Santa Fe Plaza kicks off Monday and runs for seven weeks.
Octogenarian Antonia Apodaca and her Trio Jalapeño will open the summer series with a blend of traditional Northern New Mexico folk songs and original music beginning at noon, series organizer David Lescht said.
Apodaca, who sings and plays both guitar and accordion, was born into a family of musicians in Rociada. The Jalapeño trio also includes radio personality Ray Casias on guitar, and woodcarver and bass violinist Bernardo Jaramillo.
At 6 p.m. Monday, the initial evening show of the series will feature the blues, country, and soul music of Southern songstress Shannon McNally & Hot Sauce. Organizers are encouraging residents to bring lawn chairs for the event, which opens with the magic, juggling and clowning of The Clan Tynker Family Circus, siblings who perform a variety of talents in a whimsical "Old World/Vaudeville" style of entertainment.
Through Aug. 19, various local and touring performers will take to the Community Stage on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6-8:30 p.m. as well as every Monday and Wednesday from noon to 1:30 p.m.
Among the genres represented during the 79 scheduled performances are blues, Latin, Native, country, rock reggae, R&B, jazz, bluegrass, folk, Americana, alternative and world beat.
Major funding is provided by the city of Santa Fe's Arts Commission and Convention and Visitors Bureau, the McCune Charitable Foundation and the Frost Foundation. Other funding comes from Los Alamos National Bank, Santa Fe County, the Santa Fe Community Foundation, the Plaza Café, Jackalope, Corazón and La Montanita Co-op.
In-kind sponsors include Garrett's Desert Inn and Don Fernando de Taos Hotel & Suites; The Cowgirl BBQ and Grill; The Santa Fe New Mexican; The Hutton Broadcasting Group: 98.1 Radio Free Santa Fe, Project 101.5, 107.5 Outlaw Country, Blu102.9, ESPN Radio and TALK 1260 AM; Santa Fe Community TV Channel 16; and AM 810 Que Suave.
The series is produced by Outside In, a nonprofit, community-based group established in 1995 to bring free, live performances, presentations and workshops to people confined to shelters, residential treatment facilities, nursing homes, correctional facilities and other institutions or human services programs where people would otherwise not have access to the arts.
