Break out the sweaters and hot chocolate, if you haven't already. Pick the last of the tomatoes and harvest everything else you can save from the summer garden.

Autumn officially arrived with Tuesday's solstice. And, right on cue, forecasters say Santa Fe has a 30 percent chance of snow tonight and some continued cold temperatures with a low of 31 degrees.

The National Weather Service has issued a freeze watch for parts of Santa Fe, Los Alamos and San Miguel counties, as well as northeastern New Mexico from late Tuesday night into this morning.

Thursday could bring more rain showers and then forecasters predict the skies will be sunny again through the weekend with the highs in the 40s and 50s.

The Santa Fe snowpack telemetry site at 11,445 feet elevation still measured an inch of snow on Tuesday and reported the site had received 35.6 inches of precipitation since Jan.1. The temperature Tuesday afternoon was 27 degrees.

The next couple of weeks will be a good time to pack an autumn picnic and find an excuse for a long lunch break from work. Expect the Sangre de Cristos to color up fast with the cold.

Ski Santa Fe will start running the fall color chairlift on Thursday through Oct. 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day. The chairlift gives riders a bird's eye view of golden aspens around the ski basin. Tickets are $10 for a round trip. For more information: www.skisantafe.com.
