A rash of late-afternoon traffic accidents Sunday caused several minor injuries and blocked traffic both north of Santa Fe on U.S. 84/285 near Pojoaque and south of the city on Interstate 25 north of La Cienega.
Details were still sketchy, but the most serious apparently was a six-car pileup on northbound I-25 near the National Guard headquarters. None of the injuries was believed to be serious, according to State Police Major Jesus Orozco. The cause of the accident is still being investigated.
Another accident occurred on I-25 north of the N.M. 599 intersection when a vehicle blew a tire and hit a guard rail. The female driver, who was not identified, suffered minor injuries, said city police Lt. Dale Lettenberger.
Santa Fe police also were called to the scene of a two-car, rear-end mishap on I-25 south of N.M. 599, which appeared to be related to the backup of cars caused by the series of accidents, Lettenberger said.
The La Cienega Volunteer Fire Department answered the call to yet another accident on northbound I-25 in which the vehicle leaked gasoline and caught on fire. No injuries were reported in that incident.
The I-25 crashes occurred between 3:30 and 5 p.m., investigators said.
Northbound lanes were closed for a short time as traffic was routed along the east frontage road to N.M. 599
Earlier north of Santa Fe, a vehicle driven by Monica Velasquez, 21, of Alcalde flipped onto its top, backing up the northbound lanes of U.S. 84/285. Orozco said Velasquez suffered only minor injuries but was arrested on a bench warrant out of Los Alamos charging her with failure to pay fines for an undisclosed offense.
