The body of an unidentified man was found Sunday evening in the Santa Fe River bed in downtown Santa Fe. Police are treating the discovery as a homicide.

Police Chief Aric Wheeler said the body of an Anglo male in his mid- to late 30s was found by passers-by in the river in the 300 block of DeVergas Street.

The call came in to police about 6 p.m., Wheeler said, from witnesses who said they saw what appeared to be a body lying in 10 to 12 inches of water near DeVargas Park.

The park is expected to remain sealed off much of today as police continue their investigation. Wheeler said nightfall and rainy conditions prevented a thorough search of the site Sunday night. "It was very dark down there," he said.

However, he noted that the body was lying in a large amount of debris.

Wheeler said an autopsy will be conducted by the state medical examiner's office in Albuquerque today. He said the body had no obvious signs of inflicted injury, but that because of the circumstances and that it wasn't an obvious death by natural causes, the death is being investigated as a homicide.

Some autopsy results, such as possible blunt-force injuries, will be available for police as early as today, but results of toxicology tests will take longer, Wheeler said.
