Editors note: The New Mexican will be featuring a weekly update on the progress and activities leading up to the opening of the Railyard.

• Did you know that the Railyard Grand Opening is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 13-14 — and you're invited? The celebration takes place from
10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

• Did you know that, with the exception of food and drink purchases, all events are FREE for you, your family, friends and all of Santa Fe?

• Did you know that the event is presented by the City of Santa Fe, Santa Fe Railyard Community Corporation and The Trust for Public Land — partners in the Railyard revitalization? These three organizations will host special Railyard dedication ceremonies on Saturday between 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. featuring city, state and U.S. dignitaries, Santa Fe poet laureate Valerie Martinez, and a special "kiss" by the Santa Fe Southern Railway and the Rail Runner Express.

• Did you know that, from 7 a.m. to noon on Saturday, the Santa Fe Farmers Market will take place in the beautiful new Farmers Market building and on the Railyard Plaza? Welcome home, Northern New Mexico farmers.

• Did you know that all of your favorite Railyard-based nonprofit institutions — including Warehouse 21, El Museo Cultural and SITE Santa Fe — will welcome visitors and host special activities throughout the grand-opening weekend? Railyard galleries and businesses will also celebrate the occasion with a variety of special offerings.

• Did you know that on Saturday at 2:30 p.m., the Santa Fe Community Foundation will bury a time capsule holding the community's wishes for the city's next 25 years in the Railway Gardens of the Railyard Park? The brushed stainless-steel capsule, designed by Railyard-area artist Brett Chomer, will also include a 2006 aerial map of the city, details of the Railyard plan, and other memorabilia — all to be unearthed in 2031. Anyone wishing to add their dreams for Santa Fe to the time capsule is asked to send them to the Foundation at P.O. Box 1827, Santa Fe, NM 87504-1827, or via e-mail to vingram@santafecf.org before Sept. 10.

• Did you know that a variety of special transportation and parking options will be provided throughout the grand-opening weekend for your convenience? These include free citywide bus and shuttle service, and Sunday train rides on the Santa Fe Southern Railway from the New Mexico Department of Transportation to the Railyard. Your entire family can take part in Sunday's all-ages bike parade from the historic Plaza to the new Railyard Plaza. While there will be free weekend parking in the Railyard's new underground parking garage, space is limited because of the large number of visitors expected.

• Did you know that the weekend also features ongoing live music and dance performances, a free movie in the new Railyard Park, a dance at the new Railyard Plaza, children's art-making, lowrider cars and bikes, corvettes, a multi-faith blessing and so much more?

• Did you know that you can get a full schedule of events and more grand-opening information? Just call 955-6949 or visit www.RailyardGrandOpening.com.

The Railyard community grand opening weekend is scheduled for Sept. 13 and 14.

The circle will be unbroken

Charles MacKay became Santa Fe Opera's third general director on Oct. 1, 2008. Looked at one way, that means he'll have been on the job just 276 days when the 2009 season opens on Friday, July 3. On the other hand, there's an excellent case to be made that MacKay has been preparing for this position, sometimes on the job, for quite a bit longer. Try 40-some years. »Story

CENTRAL NEVADA TEST AREA, Nev. — At the center of a desolate valley in the middle of Nevada, more than a dozen miles from the nearest paved road, one of the few signs of human activity is a rusty steel well casing that juts oddly out of the desert floor. »Story
