Fifth-graders to interview eldersOn Wednesday, 45 students from two fifth-grade classes at Gonzales Elementary School will visit the Mary Esther Gonzales Senior Center to interview seniors and learn valuable historical information. Seniors carry a wealth of history and are an integral part of recording different perspectives of past events that can rarely be found in history textbooks. The students will stay and have lunch with seniors.
Upon their return, they will use their notes and write a historical essay and bind it into a book. The final product will be presented to the seniors at a later date and a copy will be kept at the MEG Senior Center and at Gonzales Elementary.
If you would like to be interviewed, please join us from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Oct. 8 at the Mary Esther Gonzales Senior Center, 1121 Alto St.
The Alzheimer's Café
The Alzheimer's Café is a monthly gathering of people affected by Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. The café features a variety of entertainment including sing-alongs, dancing and socializing. It offers a chance for everyone to relax and connect with others in the same situation.
Bere Meissen, the Dutch psychiatrist who pioneered this idea, started it in Holland in 2003 with just 30 guests, and now up to 150 people attend each month, including psychotherapists, nurses, priests and social workers.
It is for anyone with Alzheimer's disease or dementia, anyone caring for someone with dementia, any professional interested in dementia or any family member or friend of someone with dementia. There will be refreshments and fun at every meeting.
The Alzheimer's Café is under the auspices of the New Mexico Dance Coalition, a nonprofit corporation. There is a suggested donation of $5 per person.
The café will meet from 2-4 p.m., every second Wednesday of the month in the Annex at the College of Santa Fe. Join in the fun Oct. 8, Nov. 12 and Dec. 10.
For more information about the café and ways you can support it, contact Jytte Lokvig, Ph.D., author of Alzheimer's A to Z, at lokvig@Alzatoz.com or 466-8195; or Jan Olsen at janolsen@cnsp.com or 424-0577.
