Jennifer Tilly was back visiting Indian Market this weekend. She was out and about Friday night, and then seen at market on Saturday. Also seen on the Plaza was actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, spotted at a booth. Most impressive, though, was the sight of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in the throngs of people on the Plaza on Saturday of market. Wisely, the justice wore a broad hat to protect herself from the very bright sun.

Speaking of Justice Ginsburg, she also attended the final performance of the Santa Fe Opera's Billy Budd on Aug. 21. After the performance, Ginsburg mentioned to an orchestra member that she had been to three other productions of Billy Budd — in her mind, the Santa Fe Opera production was tops.

Robert Duvall and a companion stopped in at Ecco Espresso and Gelato on East Marcy Street on Thursday. Since arriving in town for the filming of Crazy Heart, the iconic and Oscar-winning actor has been out and about around town. On this stop, he was casually clad in what looked like sweats and that male favorite, a baseball cap. Down South, those head coverings are better known as "gimme-caps," because businesses give them out to advertise.

Interestingly, in these political times, are Duvall's connections to both Barack Obama and John McCain. According to the IMDB movie Web site, Obama and Duvall are both descended from French immigrant Mareen Duvall (as are both Dick Cheney and Harry Truman). Duvall also is connected to McCain, whose ancestor worked with George Washington, a relation of Duvall's through adoption.

Santa Fe's sister to the north, Taos, gets a publicity shot in the arm from O, The Oprah Magazine in its September issue as one great fall getaway. From fantastic flora to great views to superb hiking, Taos is billed as one of the best places to visit across the country during autumn.

The spread even features a photo of El Prado, featuring the ever-popular chile ristras (spelled, unfortunately, as chili in the cutline). In that same issue, you'll find Santa Fe resident Willa Shalit, featured in an article about her work with the women of Rwanda.

A shout-out to teen Lucy Ohlsen, a 16-year-old Santa Fe High student who is off to Denmark this year as an exchange student. She dances, plays French horn and piano and loves to write. Her dad, Greg Ohlsen, owns the Travel Bug, and her mom, Ellen Stelling, is a self-employed CPA.

The circle will be unbroken

Charles MacKay became Santa Fe Opera's third general director on Oct. 1, 2008. Looked at one way, that means he'll have been on the job just 276 days when the 2009 season opens on Friday, July 3. On the other hand, there's an excellent case to be made that MacKay has been preparing for this position, sometimes on the job, for quite a bit longer. Try 40-some years. »Story

Nevada's nuclear secret

CENTRAL NEVADA TEST AREA, Nev. — At the center of a desolate valley in the middle of Nevada, more than a dozen miles from the nearest paved road, one of the few signs of human activity is a rusty steel well casing that juts oddly out of the desert floor. »Story
