Cancer group gives $416,000 in grants

The Central New Mexico affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure has given $416,000 worth of grants to organizations that support breast health education and breast-cancer screening and treatment programs.

The grants will be distributed to programs in Santa Fe, Bernalillo, Sandoval, Valencia, Los Alamos and Torrance counties.

Locally, some of the funds will go to the state Department of Health for screening services; and to the St. Vincent Hospital Foundation to establish a fund to cover the cost of mammograms and follow-up testing for women in Santa Fe County who do not have health insurance.

SAR hosts April lecture series

The School for Advanced Research will present three free lectures in April.

The lectures will be held at noon Wednesdays in the SAR board room at 660 Garcia St.

On April 15, Daniel J. Hoffman, an assistant professor of anthropology from the University of Washington, will discuss "Violence in the Digital Age: Youth and Spectacular Performance in the Sierra Leone and Liberia Wars."

On April 22, Wenda Trevathan, an anthropology and sociology regents professor at New Mexico State University, will discuss "Redefining the 'Normal' in Women's Health: The View from Evolutionary Medicine."

On April 29, Marit Munson, an associate professor of anthropology at Trent University, will discuss "Intention, Enchantment and the Aesthetics of Renewal in the Art of the Prehistoric Southwest."

Autism expert to speak in Santa Fe

Raun K. Kaufman, an autism specialist and CEO of the Autism Treatment Center of America, will give a free lecture in Santa Fe later this month.

The speech, "Autism: Recovery is Possible — 2 Hours That Will Change Your Child's Life — The Autism Hope Action Plan," will discuss Kaufman's story of recovery from autism and investigate strategies for parents to help children suffering from the disorder.

Kristin Selby Gonzales, director of autism education for Enzymedica, will also discuss her experiences as the mother of a son with autism.

The talks, which are part of a national tour, will be held Saturday, at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 18, at Vitamin Cottage, 3328 Cerrillos Road.

Seminars focus on holistic healing

The Integrative Holistic Healing Center will host a series of free seminars in April by Daniel Cobb, a doctor of oriental medicine.

All seminars will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Mondays at the center, 826 Camino de Monte Rey, Suite B2.

On April 13, Cobb will discuss how to reverse osteoporosis with dietary changes and nutritional supplements.

On April 20, Cobb will show a recorded presentation by David Ayoub on the dangers of vaccines.

On April 27, Cobb will talk about medical research fraud.
