Applicants sought for cancer retreat

Cancer Services of New Mexico is seeking applications for its Fall 2009 Family Cancer Retreat.

The free retreat will be Sept. 11-13 at the Lifeway Glorieta Conference Center in Glorieta. The event provides information and tools for adult cancer patients and survivors and their loved ones.

More than 250 people from 100 New Mexico families coping with cancer are expected to participate.

Space is limited, so the group is asking applicants to sign up as early as possible. For information or to request a packet, call Mike Capeless at 239-4239, or visit www.cancerservicesnm.org on the Web.

Research school offers free lectures

The School for Advanced Research is offering four free lectures in late June and early July.

All will be held at the school's board room, 660 Garcia St., at noon.

The lectures are:

June 24: "The Spacio-temproal Effects of Enclosing Palestine," by Julie Peteet, a University of Louisville anthropology professor.

July 1: "Quelling Anguis: A Political Economy of Emotions in the Everyday Life of Health Heads of Household in Kigali, Rwanda," by Maggie Zraly, a national international research fellow at the School of Public Health at the National University of Rwanda.

July 8: "Ales Hrdlicka and the Anthropology of the Unwanted," by J. Andrew Darling, director of cultural resource management at the Gila River Indian Community.

July 15: "When Researchers Meet the Researched: Interpretations of Proper Exchange in International AIDS Research in Rural Malawi," by Crystal Biruk, Ph.D. candidate in the University of Pennsylvania Department of Anthropology.
