Chatfield takes over market

Española Community Market, a natural foods co-op in the works for Española and the surrounding area, has named Nancy Chatfield president to push the initiative forward after the death of former president Roger Salles in October.

Chatfield has been the vice president since 2006. She has a background in economic development, education, marketing, media sales and owned two retail shops in New York State.

Buffalo Thunder gets awards

Hilton Santa Fe Golf Resort & Spa at Buffalo Thunder is the recipient of three industry awards that recognize the resort as a top meetings destination.

The luxury golf and casino property, which opened in the fall of 2008, received the "2010 Elite Gold Certification" from Elite Meetings International; a "2009 Platinum Choice Award" from Smart Meetings magazine; and a "2009 Gold Key Award" from Meetings & Conventions magazine.

Hilton Santa Fe Golf Resort & Spa at Buffalo Thunder offers 66,000 square feet of meeting and convention space that includes an on-site wedding chapel.

IRS: 5 changes you should note

The Internal Revenue Service says the following are the top five changes that may show up on your 2009 tax return.

* The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act

ARRA provides several tax provisions that affect tax year 2009 individual tax returns due April 15, 2010. The recovery law provides tax incentives for first-time homebuyers, people who purchased new cars and others.

* IRA deduction expanded

You may be able to take an IRA deduction if you were covered by a retirement plan and your 2009 modified adjusted gross income is less than $65,000 or $109,000 if you are married filing a joint return.

* Standard Deduction increased for most taxpayers

The 2009 basic standard deductions all increased. They are:

$11,400 for married couples filing a joint return and qualifying widows and widowers

$5,700 for singles and married individuals filing separate returns

$8,350 for heads of household

* 2009 Standard mileage rate

The standard mileage rate changed for 2009 is 55 cents per mile

* Kiddie tax change

The amount of taxable investment income a child can have without it being subject to tax at the parent's rate has increased to $1,900.
