King: Lower title insurance

New Mexico Attorney General Gary King is asking the state insurance superintendent to reduce title insurance rates by more than 13 percent in order to reduce real estate transaction costs for consumers.

"The last 20 years have been extremely profitable for the New Mexico title insurance industry, with their profits in some years more than double what the Superintendent declared to be reasonable, yet rates have continued to rise," King said in a statement. "I think it's time for New Mexico home buyers to get a break on the high costs of real estate transactions."

The insurance superintendent has about 60 days to issue his final order on rates for title insurance.
