The Internal Revenue Service wants to give rather than receive — at least to the more than 700 New Mexicans who are due a tax refund check.
People in 28 of New Mexico's 33 counties are due a check, and those counties in Northern New Mexico include Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, Taos and Mora.
Statewide, residents of Bernalillo County are owed the largest number of checks (280), followed by Doña Ana County (96) and Santa Fe County (56)
The average dollar amount of undelivered checks in New Mexico is $961.
Nationwide, the IRS is looking for taxpayers who are due to receive $123.5 million in the form of 107,831 refund checks.
All a taxpayer has to do is update his or her address once. That can be done with the "Where's My Refund" tool on IRS.gov.
The IRS will then send out all checks due. Undeliverable refund checks average $1,148 this year as compared to $990 last year.
A telephone version of "Where's My Refund" is available by calling 1-800-829-1954.
